FAQ's
General Product Questions
Is there such a thing as antimicrobial whiteboard paint?Â
Smarter Surfaces' Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint is an innovative product that prevents bacteria from growing on the whiteboard surface by utilizing silver ion antimicrobial technology to: Interrupts bacteria and fungi cell metabolism, Inhibits cellular division and Disrupts transport across cell walls
Basically it stops the bacteria from multiplying by stopping the membrane around the cell (like the skin of the cell) from working. Antimicrobial whiteboard paint is a great solution where many people and teams will use the whiteboard paint and creating a safe working surface is a consideration.
Antimicrobial vs Antibacterial vs Antiviral. What’s the difference between antimicrobial, antibacterial and antiviral?
All bacteria are microbes, however not all microbes are bacteria.
Antimicrobials can refer to agents that deal with fungi and other microbes as well as bacteria. Antibacterial agents will only deal with bacteria. They are both different from antiviral agents.
Antiviral is specifically for things such as COVID-19, which are a different type of cell. The main difference being that the viruses tend to have a fatty surround, so in order to kill viruses you often have a two-part process where you basically have to get through the fatty part to get to the virus itself.
How does antimicrobial/antibacterial paint work?
Antimicrobial paint contains certain agents that destroy or inhibit the growth of microorganisms, especially those that are pathogenic.
Our antibacterial paint uses broad spectrum antimicrobial technology that is effective against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. We use a highly effective antimicrobial agent that is based on silver phosphate glass technology that kills microorganisms and stops their growth. We have developed a new whiteboard paint technology specifically designed to combat the types of bacteria that would likely be found on a surface that is used as a whiteboard.
Our antibacterial technology is registered for use by the Canadian Biocidal Products Directive.
What does Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint work against?
Our antimicrobial paint will work against: MRSA, MSSA, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae
What is considered antibacterial? What are antibacterial agents?
An antibacterial agent is anything that destroys bacteria or suppresses their growth or their ability to reproduce. Antibacterial agents will only work against bacteria but will not be effective against viruses or fungi such as MRSA, MSSA, or Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
Is antimicrobial whiteboard paint worth it?
Yes, it's worth it in hygiene-sensitive spaces, as it actively reduces bacteria and helps maintain cleaner surfaces, but it may be unnecessary for low-risk environments.
Application & Usage
What type of roller should be used to apply Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint?
Each kit comes with a roller designed for use with Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint. For optimal results, apply the paint using a mohair or lint-free short pile roller sleeve. If you opt for a mohair roller, ensure that all loose fibers are removed before use.
Is antimicrobial whiteboard paint applicable to all surfaces?
Antibacterial paint for walls can be applied to nearly any smooth surface, including glass, metal, concrete, and wood.
Is the use of antimicrobial whiteboard paint on wallpaper allowed?
Yes, it can be applied over wallpaper, but only if the wallpaper is smooth. Do not use it on textured wallpaper. For a white finish, apply two coats of Whiteboard Primer.
Can antimicrobial whiteboard paint be utilized outdoors?
Yes. The product has been tested to endure temperatures as low as minus 16 degrees Celsius and is resistant to UV light (ultraviolet). However, the area should be sheltered and kept dry for optimal performance. It should also be noted that Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint should not be stored for long periods in sub-zero temperatures.
Can existing whiteboards be painted with Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint?
Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint is an excellent option for repairing most surfaces of whiteboards. It can be applied directly to existing whiteboards after using White Primer (note that a primer is necessary before applying antimicrobial whiteboard paint), ensuring that all marker residue is cleaned off beforehand. For blackboards, wipe the surface with a damp cloth to eliminate any old chalk, then coat with White Primer, followed by the application of Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint.
Which kind of heater can be used to dry the paint faster? Can you use an infrared lamp?
A traditional fan heater helps expedite the drying process. An infrared lamp may be used; however, it must not be positioned too near the surface.
Can you paint over antimicrobial whiteboard paint?
In most cases, yes, you can paint over antimicrobial whiteboard paint. However, it's important to ensure proper adhesion and compatibility between the existing antimicrobial whiteboard paint and the new paint.
Is it advisable to paint floors with antimicrobial whiteboard paint?
Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint has not been evaluated for slip resistance, and like any painted surface, it may wear depending on traffic. The performance guarantee pertains to its function as a dry erase paint and does not extend beyond that application.
Surface Prep & Priming
Why is it necessary to apply primer before using Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint?
A primer helps in achieving a smooth finish on the surface. It also serves to ‘seal’ the surface. This means that when you apply Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint on a primed surface, the components of the paint remain on the wall instead of being absorbed. Using a primer or sealer results in a smoother surface that provides optimal write-on-wipe-off functionality.
Is Magnetic Paint suitable as a base product?
Yes, we recommend utilizing the Super Magnetic Paint or the Magnetic Plaster. For an easily installed magnetic and writable surface, consider the Magnetic Whiteboard Wallpaper instead.
Cleaning & Maintenance
How can I remove the paint from my skin?
You have two options for removing antimicrobial whiteboard paint from your skin. The first method is to dissolve salt in warm water and rinse your hands with this solution. The second method involves using a pre-made product known as sand soap, which can be found at any reputable auto parts store.
What should I do if I accidentally spill the paint?
You can clean Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint using any Xylene-based cleaner, readily available at DIY or automotive supply stores. Please be aware that this method is not suitable for removing the paint from the skin.
Why are there ‘shadows’ or large marks on my whiteboard surface, and how can I fix them?
These marks are typically caused by incorrect application, most commonly when the paint is stretched to cover a larger area than recommended or not applied evenly. To avoid this, always follow the application guidelines carefully and ensure the product is used within its specified coverage area.
If the marks have already appeared, you can try using a Permanent Ink Remover on the affected areas to improve the surface. This should only be used as a corrective solution, not for regular cleaning. If the issue persists, contact support with a photo of the surface, your order number, and the total area covered to support@smartersurfaces.ca.
Is it safe to clean my Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint surface with alcohol?
Regular use of alcohol on Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint may compromise the surface's integrity and diminish its effectiveness. The specially formulated cleaning fluids are designed to offer optimal cleaning results while preserving the quality you expect from your surface. Explore the complete range of cleaning products here.
Can I use permanent markers on this surface?
No, similar to any conventional whiteboard, Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint is incompatible with permanent markers. If permanent markers are applied to Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint, we recommend using the Permanent Ink Remover for removal.
Functionality & Performance

ill the paint yellow on walls when exposed to sunlight?

Can antimicrobial whiteboard paint be utilized as a projector screen?
Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint can serve as a projection surface with short throw or ultra-short throw projectors, although it was not intended for this use. Many of the education and business clients utilize Antimicrobial Whiteboard Paint as both a projection and whiteboard surface. For optimal projection quality, we recommend using one of the projection screen solutions that are designed for projection purposes.
Will there be any reflections or not?
