FAQ's
General Product Questions
Is there whiteboard paint?
Whiteboard paint is a high-performance whiteboard paint that can be used to smooth surfaces like walls or desks, converting them into functional whiteboard areas that can be used with any standard whiteboard marker. Smarter Surfaces whiteboard paint for walls consists of two components that, when combined, create a dry erase surface where you can draw, write, and erase using dry erase markers.
What’s the best whiteboard paint?
The best whiteboard paint depends on the surface, desired functionality, and quality standards. Smarter Surfaces Whiteboard Paint is considered the best because it works on any smooth surface and meets high safety and environmental standards, including Fire, LEED, M1, VOC, IAC, low VOC, solvent-free, PFOA, PFOS, isocyanate-free, and California Proposition 65 compliance.
For white surfaces, use White Whiteboard Paint. For coloured surfaces or to preserve an existing finish, choose Clear Whiteboard Paint. Additional options like magnetic or projection functionality are also available.
Are there different colours of dry erase board paint available?
Dry Erase Paint is available in a white finish or a clear (transparent) finish. The clear finish allows you to retain the original color or graphics on your wall and benefit from whiteboard functionality.
How long does whiteboard paint last?
Smarter Surfaces Whiteboard Paint lasts at least 10 years with proper care.
Application & Usage
Can you repaint or paint over an existing whiteboard surface?
Yes, you can repaint or paint over an existing whiteboard or whiteboard paint surface. For best results, ensure the surface is clean, smooth, and free from any marker or chalk residue. In most cases, applying a suitable primer, such as a white primer, is recommended to improve adhesion. Once prepared, you can apply whiteboard paint to restore or create a fresh, high-performance writable surface.
What roller should you use to apply white dry erase board paint?
The Smarter Surfaces dry-erase board paint kit includes a roller. For best results, apply the paint using a mohair or lint-free short-pile roller sleeve. If you are using a mohair roller, remove all loose fibres before use. A simple way to do this is to wrap masking tape around the roller to pick up any loose fibres.
Can Whiteboard Paint be applied on any surface?
Whiteboard Paint can be applied to almost any smooth white surface, including walls, desks, furniture, glass, and partitions. To preserve an existing coloured surface, we recommend using Whiteboard Paint Clear. It can be applied over any colour except white, as it may slightly tint the wall.
Can you paint glass with whiteboard paint?
Yes, for a whiteboard finish on glass apply Smarter Surfaces Primer first. For a transparent finish, apply Whiteboard Paint Clear directly to the glass, or for a standard whiteboard finish apply Whiteboard Paint. Alternatively consider Smarter Surfaces Self Adhesive Whiteboard Films which can be applied directly to glass.
Can you use dry erase paint on wood?
Yes. Ensure that the surface is smooth before application. Fill any holes with a filler. Apply White Primer before applying Whiteboard Paint White. Sand after each coat of primer and re-apply primer as required.
Can you use whiteboard paint on wallpaper?
Yes, painting over wallpaper is possible. You can apply Whiteboard Paint over smooth wallpaper only. Do not apply over a textured wallpaper. For a white finish, apply 2 coats of White Primer. For a clear finish, use 2 coats of Clear Primer if the wallpaper is porous.
Can whiteboard paint be used outside?
Yes. Smarter Surfaces product has been tested to withstand temperatures up to minus 16 degrees celsius and is UV light (ultraviolet) resistant. However, the area should be sheltered and dry to ensure best performance. Please note Whiteboard Paint should not be stored for an extended period of time below zero.
Can you paint onto the floor with whiteboard paint?
Whiteboard Paint has not been tested for slip resistance and as with any painted finish it could wear according to the traffic on it. The performance guarantee is as a white dry erase paint and does not extend beyond that.
What type of heater can be used to speed up the primer’s drying process? Can an infrared lamp be used?
A normal fan heater can be used to speed up the drying process. An infrared lamp can also be used but it can’t be placed too close to the surface.
H4 - Can you use Magnetic Paint as a base product?
Yes, we recommend using Smarter Surfaces Super Magnetic Paint or Smarter Surfaces Magnetic Plaster. For a rapidly installed magnetic and writable surface, choose Smarter Surfaces Magnetic Whiteboard Wallpaper instead.
Surface Prep & Priming
Why should I apply primer before applying Whiteboard Paint?
A primer helps give a surface a smooth finish. Secondly, they act to ‘seal’ a surface. This means that when you apply Whiteboard Paint on a surface that has been primed, the properties within Smarter Surfaces whiteboard paint will stay on the wall rather than being absorbed into the wall. In summary, using a primer or sealer means you will get a smoother surface with optimum write-on-wipe-off functionality.
Cleaning & Maintenance
How can I get rid of stains from a whiteboard?
To eliminate stains from a whiteboard, start by using a dry erase eraser or a soft cloth along with a whiteboard cleaner. If the stain remains, apply Smarter Surfaces Permanent Ink Remover to the affected areas. This is a high-performance product that should not be used for everyday cleaning.
How can I clean my whiteboard?
Your Whiteboard Surface can be wiped clean with a regular dry or slightly damp cloth. For easier cleaning, you can also use any standard Whiteboard Cleaning Spray. For tough or stubborn marks, we recommend customers use Smarter Surfaces Permanent Ink Remover. During the first 30 days from application, we recommend cleaning your surface every day using the supplied Microfibre Cloth. After 30 days it is recommended to thoroughly clean the surface weekly with a standard whiteboard cleaner.
Is it safe to use alcohol to clean my Whiteboard Paint surface?
Frequent use of alcohol on Whiteboard Paint may compromise the quality of your surface and diminish its effectiveness. We've created the line of cleaning solutions to ensure outstanding cleaning results while preserving the quality of your surface.
Can I use permanent markers on it?
No, similar to any standard whiteboard, Whiteboard Paint is not suitable for use with permanent markers.
How do I eliminate permanent marker marks?
You might be able to erase a permanent marker by writing over it with a whiteboard marker, which will reactivate the ink, making it easier to wipe away. After waiting two minutes, wipe it off. If this does not work, utilize Smarter Surfaces Permanent Ink Remover available on Smarter Surfaces online store. This specialized cleaner is designed to tackle permanent marker, stubborn stains, and ghosting issues on whiteboards and whiteboard-coated surfaces.
Why are there shadows or large marks on my whiteboard surface, and how can I fix them?
Shadowing can occur due to incorrect application or stretching the paint beyond its recommended coverage. To reduce marks, use a Permanent Ink Remover on affected areas (for occasional use only). If the issue continues, please email a photo, order number, and surface size (in square meters) to support@smartersurfaces.ca.
